It’s my understanding,” he said, “that before I came in here a person who was on the program before I spoke made some disparaging remarks about my two colleagues in the Senate, Senator Obama and Senator Clinton. I have repeatedly stated my respect for Senator Obama and Senator Clinton, that I will treat them with respect. I will call them Senator. We will have a respectful debate, as I have said on hundreds of occasions. I regret any comments that may have been made about these two individuals who are honorable Americans.
McCain Quickly Apologizes ( Honestly, no matter how bad this election goes, having McCain as our president wouldn’t be that bad. )

My point is that information graphics are not just art. They’re a combination of art and journalism and a little bit of science. A background in art won’t hurt. It helps if you can draw, but it’s also important that you are a fast researcher, and you know the ins and outs of a variety of software packages or programming languages. You couldn’t fill our department with technical illustrators alone and do the things we do.

My friend saw my post about these earlier in the blog, then later, saw the same candy at Target. Guess they’re not recalled after all…

Infographical Collaboration- an idea.

So I’m really interested in infographics- how you can take information and convey it the best possible way. One of my favorite magazines is GOOD, who I’ve found to always have excellent infographics.

In any case- I’ve wanted to learn to create the graphics, and as such have been brainstorming what would be some cool data to display. This is an odd problem, as I think that most infographics come out of a number or a fact first, and then a designer is hired, or decides to make the graphic.

So I came up with this idea for a website- where people could submit facts, data, or statistics. Something like “Here’s a list of how much money so-and-so took from so-and-so”. And designers could go through different categories looking for something that spoke to them. When they did, they could submit their design of the infographic, which people could then vote on. The site could even have a “best of” section.

The way I could see this playing (paying) out, is that big magazines (GOOD, Seed, etc) or big newspapers (The New York Times) who are interested in infographics, could simply browse the website, and find a design they would like to feature. At that point they would pay the designer (and the website) a fee to show it.

I’ll probably never make this, but maybe someone out there will. I’d certainly appreciate it as a designer. And I think that some people have interesting moving facts that haven’t gotten “out there” because they haven’t been presented in an interesting way.
